Castanea dentata
American chestnut
This large, rapidly-growing hardwood reaches up to 100' and produces the famous nuts. Most populations in the U.S. were decimated in the early 1900s by the Chestnut blight, and populations have not recovered since... only time (and many plantings!) will tell if chestnuts will ever again be ubiquitous in the landscape.
