Dryopteris filix-mas

male fern

Male fern is relatively uncommon in New England, preferring more alkaline soils than are common in the area. The delicate, arching foliage is susceptible to trampling by wildlife, but the clumps grow hardily and can be divided and relocated. Amending soil with lime can help with establishment and continued health.
