Juglans cinerea

butternut, white walnut

The butternut tree is an alluring, slow-growing shade tree that produces sweet buttery nuts in the fall, also known as white walnuts. Alas, its history in the lumber trade and its erstwhile tendency to canker disease has rendered this tree endangered in most of its native range. Plant in fertile, well-draining soils.
