Umbrella magnolia is a rare but hardy plant in the lower Northeast, an understory tree that grows fast but stays short relative to many showy species. It bears massive white blooms which give way to astonishing magenta seedpods, which mature upright and dispense fleshy seeds about the shape, size, and color of advil.
