Mature stands of mountain laurel are striking year-round, with evergreen leaves and marvelous flowers. The gnarled, wandering branches and the vertically peeling bark suggest an East Asian aesthetic, though the species is native to New England and beyond. 'Hoffman's K' is a selection from a pink-blooming wild population, propagated by Mike Johnson at Summer Hill nursery. Mountain laurel is great as a pollen and nectar source for native bees, and supports the life cycle of the Northern Blue butterfly.
