A terribly underutilized native shrub, ninebark is named for the numerous layers of bark which progressively peel in a manner similar to birch. White clusters of flowers are followed by red seed heads. It thrives in any soil type and is a perfect choice for naturalization or even stabilizing rocky sites. 'Little Devil' is the trade name for cultivar 'Donna May,' which displays the dark red/purple foliage of 'Monlo' while maintaining a much more compact size.
