Xanthorhiza simplicissima

yellowroot

This plant is often overlooked, though it provides wonderful texture and color in shady spots and woodland edges. Deeply cut compound leaves emerge with purple flowers atop individual canes in late spring. Fall foliage is a wonderful mix of reds and purples.
