Franklin tree is native to the Altamaha river valley in Georgia, but its unique bark and massive white flowers presuaded horticulturists to add it to Garden in the Woods all the same. A member of the tea plant family, Theaceae, this relatively short tree makes an excellent focal point in moist, sunny spots. Broad, leathery-petaled white flowers bloom in late summer. It's hardy to Zone 6, but for Zone 5, plant it in areas relatively protected from deep freeze.
