Pink turtlehead gets its name from the shape of the flowers which mimic a turtle poking its head out of the shell. While restricted to moist soils in the wild, they do fine in the average garden soil so long as drought is avoided. Chelone lyonii is a species native to the southeasternUnited States, but it has naturalized readily in New England. Chelone lyonii 'Hot Lips' is a cultivar wtih darker foliage, more deeply pink flowers, and redder stems than the species.
