Filipendula rubra

queen of the priarie

A stunning plant with deeply lobed leaves that adds great texture in the garden all summer long. The frothy flowering stems make quite a spectacle, a hit with local pollinators. This plant is fine in average garden soils, but really thrives when given a moist spot with good sun exposure, where it will grow to its full height within several years. Filipendula rubra is often sold under the cultivar name 'Venusta,' but whether or not 'Venusta' truly differs from the species is unclear.
