Smooth hydrangea is a reasonably common plant used to as focal points in partially shady spots in gardens throughout the US. Since blooms come from new wood, it's common practice to cut the plants all the way back to the ground in late winter to stimulate vigorous growth in spring. This cultivar was selected for its upright growth and large flowers.
