Ilex verticillata 'Southern Gentleman'

southern gentleman winterberry

While many plants can claim fabulously red fall foliage, none can beat I. verticillata for fall fruiting, with the berries hanging onto the plant well into winter. The bright red berries are stunning when frozen in ice. Grows best when planted in moist to wet soils. 'Winter Red' is a consistently-sized female cultivar best pollinated by the male cultivar 'Southern Gentleman." It may also be pollinated by wild-type males.
