Magnolia macrophylla

Bigleaf magnolia

Bigleaf magnolia is a surprising sight in the Northeast, and though uncommon, it can thrive in moist woodlands and areas protected from wind. It bears massive, showy white flowers with rose-purple bases, sometimes they're hidden by leaves below-- these flowers may give way to vast, red, upright seed pods for a full growing season's worth of interest.
