Sweet William is an excellent woodland perennial, tolerant of a variety of soils from sand to clay, and even to the emanations of black walnut. The foliage stays low to the ground, spreading to supply groundcover throughout the growing season, but stems laden with majorly fragrant flowers erupt in spring. 'May Breeze' is a white-blooming, small-statured cultivar developed in the Netherlands and popularized in the horticultural industry by garden designer Piet Oudolf. Plant in rock gardens, along stream banks, and in woodland gardens for a strong spring showing that beguiles pollinators and humans alike.
