A terribly underutilized native shrub, ninebark is named for the numerous layers of bark which progressively peel in a manner similar to birch. White clusters of flowers are followed by red seed heads. It thrives in any soil type and is a perfect choice for naturalization or even stabilizing rocky sites. 'Summer Wine' is the trade name for the cultivar 'Seward,' released in 2004, which flowers opulently atop compact leaves ranging from purple in full sun to dark green in partial shade.
